Types of boiler explained
System Boilers
Work on sealed systems and have no feed and header tank in the roof space. The water in the system is pressurised to 1 bar at cold which rises to aprox 2.4 bar when the system is up to temperature.

System boilers contain the pump and expansion vessel for the central heating system. Your hot water cylinder can be either vented (with water tank in roof) or unvented (mains pressure hot water).
Advantages
Less air in radiators.
Boiler life increased.
Better flow rate through radiators.
Less chance of corrosion in system as not open to air.
When installed along with a unvented hot water cylinder exceptional hot water performance is available.
Disadvantages.
Less suited to old system which have small leaks.

Combination Boilers
A Combination boiler provides heating and instantaneous hot water on demand. Some Combi boilers have a small storage of hot water to allow your hot water to be instantly available at the taps without a delay (normally 30 seconds) while the water heats up in the boiler and reaches the taps.

Advantages
Ideal for smaller homes and flats.
Hot water available 24hrs a day
Central heating system pressurised.
Mains pressure water available at shower heads.Typically 0.6-0.8 bar.
No requirement for tanks in the roof or hot water storage cylinder.
Disadvantages
Reduced hot water flow rates with multiple bathrooms.
Hard water areas can reduce life span.

Traditional Boiler
Traditional boilers are connected to open vented central heating systems with a feed and expansion tank that is located in the roof space. Run at lower system pressures than system boilers typically 0.4 bar. They provide central heating and hot water through a hot water storage cylinder which can be an unvented type.
Advantages
More cost effective if a straight swap is needed.
Better suited to old central heating systems.
Disadvantages
Tank in roof needed.
Changes maybe needed to existing pipework to ensure
"pumping over" does not occur.
